What I've Been Reading In September

Hey guys!

I managed to read a grand total of 7 books this month, and I don't even know how! I guess I chose fairly short books, that I could get through in a few days. I read Everything, Everything, Entangled, Solace of the Road, Allegiant, The Duff, Untamed, and Every Day. Yep, they're all YA novels...I was hoping to read Emma this month but didn't really have time :( Depending on how much work I manage to complete this term, I'll hopefully be reading Emma during the Xmas hols. I do love a bit of Jane Austen. Anywayyy, below are my reviews of the books I've been reading in September (and I do apologise if some of them are a little long, got a bit carried away while I was writing them!):

1. Everything, Everything

Although I received an ARC copy of Everything, Everything from Netgallery, I wasn't actually planning to read it for a while. However, I heard amazing things about this book on Goodreads, and couldn't put it off any longer. I am so so so glad I read Everything, Everything - it's such a beautifully written book. I like the illustrations too. If you want to read my full review, head over to my book blog. But, for those of you in a hurry, I'd just like to tell you that I urge you to read Everything, Everything. Nicola Yoon has done an incredible job and I hope she releases more books soon!

2. Entangled

Entangled is the second book I've read by Cat Clarke, Torn being the first. Yet again, I was impressed with her writing; Cat Clarke has this way of capturing the reader's attention right from the start and making them want to read until the very end. This was definitely true for me, when I read Entangled. It's a fast-paced novel and I found myself aching to find out why Grace (the protagonist) was in the white room, separated from all her friends and family. I will point out that there is a twist near the end, and if you're anything like me, you'll be thinking "damn! I knew it!" I could just see it coming! Grace isn't a very likeable main character (she's a bit obsessed with boys and partying), but the twist is guaranteed to make you feel sorry for her. I'll also mention that the ending of the book isn't very clear - you're left to your own interpretation. I kind of feel like there should be a sequel, though maybe that's just me? Nevertheless, I think I do prefer Entangled to Torn!

3. Solace of the Road

I've also done a longer review of Solace of the Road over on A Secret Book Lover, but I'll write a brief summery of the book here. Solace of the Road is by Siobhan Dowd, who sadly passed away a while ago. I'd heard of Siobhan Dowd years ago, but I had no idea she was no longer alive until fairly recently. Anyway, Solace of the Road is a beautifully written novel (yeh, I said the exact same thing about Everything, Everything, but it's true!). The author has done a fantastic job at drawing in her reader and making them want to read on and find out whether Holly ends up being reunited with her mother or not. Holly may not be the most likeable character, but I was able to sympathise with her and I did understand why she was so desperate to see her mother again. I love how Holly stumbled upon a wig in her new foster parents' house and uses it as a way of reinventing herself when she goes on her journey across England. I've added A Swift Pure Cry to my reading list as I want to see what else Siobhan Dowd has to offer.

4. Allegiant

I actually managed to successfully complete the Divergent trilogy before the first part of the final book is released in cinemas early next year. Woo! Although I did enjoy Allegiant as a whole, I was a bit disappointed with the ending. I know I'm not the only one. Ok, so I did already know what would happen (yay for spoilers!) but I did still have this tiny glimmer of hope that it was all just lies. Unfortunately, the truly devastating thing did happen. Veronica Roth, how could you do that to your readers?! I trusted you! Anyway, if you haven't already done so, go read the Divergent trilogy. Just be prepared for violence, death and heartbreak.

5. The DUFF

I always try to read the book before seeing the film, but this completely failed with The Duff. But now, almost four months after watching the film, I finally got round to reading the book. As with the film adaptation, Kody Keplinger's book is hilarious. I found myself laughing out loud on several occasions. Having already seen the film, I was shocked at how different it is to the book - there are so many changes (though I won't reveal what those are). However, Bianca remains her cynical self, and Wesley is still a total douchebag. I did find Bianca to be somewhat excruciating at first, what with all her pessimism, but I did end up liking her as the story progressed, and I could connect with her. Bianca's home life is pretty terrible, and it's understandable why she would turn to Wesley as an escape, even though the very thought of his name infuriates her. The Duff  is a light-hearted read and I'll definitely be reading some of Kody Keplinger's books in the future.

6. Untamed

I've actually gone over the number of books on my summer reading list, but that's probably because I've received quite a few ebooks and ARCs recently, Untamed being one. Untamed is Madeline Dyer's debut novel, and it was released fairly recently, so don't worry if you haven't heard of it (I probably wouldn't know the book existed either, if it weren't for the fact that it had cropped up on my newsfeed earlier this summer). Untamed is a dystopian novel that focuses on Seven, a young girl whose mother has just disappeared. Seven has to decide between betraying her family and joining the Enhanced, the group she believes her mother is now a part of, or staying with the Untamed, the group she's been brought up it. The story follows Seven as she tries to make the right decision, encountering her enemies and first love along the way. Seven is a brave and strong protagonist, as YA Dystopian heroines should be. She's had a tough upbringing, but doesn't let it affect her too much. Although gripping and fast-paced, Untamed is very dark and violent. It can get a bit uncomfortable at times. However, Untamed is a well-thought out novel, and it's hard to believe that it is a first novel. Untamed is a great book for anyone who is a fan of the dystopian genre but wants something unique and different.

7. Every Day

Every Day is a very unique book. I've never read anything like it. Every day is sort of the same for A, the protagonist - he / she wakes up in someone else's body, but it's a different person each time. In a way, this does make the book feel a little repetitive, but it is interesting to find out the stories of the various people whose lives A borrows. There was one part that was particularly moving, when A wakes up as a girl who is about to commit suicide. A is a very difficult character to talk about since he / she doesn't have a gender or body. However, it is clear that A is kind and sweet. Despite this, I didn't like the fact that A tried to split Rhiannon and Justin up - a selfish move on A's part. Nevertheless, Justin is a complete jerk, so it's understandable that A thinks Rhiannon can do better. I also thought that the ending was a bit of a let down - it does seem quite rushed. Every Day is such a quotable book - my copy was literally full of post-it notes with phrases and paragraphs that I loved. I wish I could share them all with you, but this post is already getting rather long. There is, however, a quote that sums up A, and his / her life quite well, so I'll insert it here: "I am a drifter, and as lonely as that can be, it is also remarkably freeing. I will never feel the pressure of peers or the burden of parental expectation. I can view everyone as pieces of a whole, and focus on the whole, not the pieces. I have learned to observe, far better than most people observe. I am not blinding by the past or motivated by the future. I focus on the present because that is where I am destined to live." So beautiful, isn't it?!

In summary, Every Day is a book about identity, and above all, acceptance. It shows that we all fall in love at some point, no matter what shape, size, gender or orientation we may be. Every Day is heart-warming, captivating, original and thought-provoking. I'd highly recommend it.

So there are my mini book reviews for September! What books have you been reading lately? Have you read any of the same books as me?! What is on your TBR list for October? I'm going back to uni on the weekend, so unfortunately I'll be back to a few months of absolutely no fiction reading :(

September Beauty Wishlist

Hey guys!

How are you? I've almost finished my first week of work experience at Olive Magazine and I'm really enjoying it so far! It's great seeing how a magazine works. I even got to do some cooking today! As I'm going to be doing more beauty-based posts on my blog, I thought what would be more appropriate than a wishlist? I love creating wishlists. Although it's likely that you won't be able to afford every single product on the list, it's a fun thing to do. It also gives you a totally valid recent to spend a few hours online window shopping! Perfect!

1. I Love...

I've been lusting over I Love...products for aaages. I particularly have my eye on the Mango & Papaya and Strawberries & Cream bath and shower crèmes. I absolutely love anything that contains mango or strawberry. They are two of my favourite flavours (along with vanilla and coconut).

2. Treaclemoon

Treaclemoon (which is available at Tesco) has a whole selection of bath and shower products, suitable for every taste. If ginger and almond aren't up your street, there's always the more fruity flavours, such as blackberry, strawberry and raspberry. Yummy!

3. Dolly's Mixtures

ASDA has a new range of shower gels, based on cocktails and traditional British sweets. The Pina Colada, Rhubarb & Custard and Peach Melba flavours sound soo tempting! And how cute are the bottles?! I want!

4. Café de Bain

OK, so maybe this post should be called 'Bath and Shower Wishlist', rather than 'Beauty Wishlist', but there are just so many different shower gels / crèmes that I need want! Café de Bain is another brand with delicious bath and shower crèmes on offer. The bottles are only £2.99 each so there is really no reason why I haven't bought any yet!

5. Amie

Moving onto face products this time! How pretty are the Amie bottles?! I tend to stick to Simple products for my face, but I think I might try Amie for a change. It does seem to be primarily aimed towards teenagers, but I think it is suitable for adults too.

6. Good Things

More pretty bottles alert! I've been wanting to try the Good Things range for a while, and fortunately I recently received the Five Minute Face Mask Anti Blemish Avocado & Goji Berry as a gift. Nevertheless, I would like to try more products by this brand.

Have you tried any of these products? What did you think? Would you recommend them? What products are on your wishlist?

10 TV Shows and Films to Look Forward to this Autumn

Hey guys!

Today's post will focus on some of the upcoming TV shows and films that are being released this Autumn.

TV Shows

1. Scream Queens

This isn't the type of programme I'd usually watch but I'll give it a chance because Emma Roberts, Lea Michele, Diego Boneta, Lucien Laviscount and Jamie Lee Curtis. Also, Keke Palmer, Nick Jonas and Ariana Grande. You'd be crazy not to think that that's a perfect cast. (By the way, isn't this out now? Where can I watch it?!)

2. Wicked City

It stars Ed Westwick. Need I say more?

3. Blood & Oil

This photo reminds me of Gossip Girl!

This series looks quite intriguing, and it stars Chace Crawford. Definitely going on my watchlist for this Autumn.

4. Heroes Reborn

I never did watch the original series of Heroes, but this looks like it could be good.

5. Supergirl

This show focuses on Superman's cousin. It's different to other superhero stories as the main character is female.

Films

1. The Scorch Trials

This is actually already out in cinemas at the moment and I haven't even read the book yet. No, just no. I want to read the book first so unfortunately I won't be watching The Scorch Trials for a while.

2. Mockingjay Part 2

I can't wait for this film! I love The Hunger Games!

3. Jem and the Holograms

Jem and the Holograms is another film I'm really looking forward to. Trailer looks great.

4. Pan

Amanda Seyfried and Rooney Mara! Yes! Plus, it's based on Peter Pan! Yes, yes!

What films and TV shows are you planning to watch this season?

What I Love About Autumn and Winter

Hey guys!

Before beginning this post, I thought I'd just mention that I'm not the biggest fan of Autumn and Winter. Now I know that's strange, considering the title of this post, but don't get me wrong, there are still a few things I do like about this time of year. What I'm not so keen on, however, is the cold weather. Being a naturally cold weather, the 10+ months of rain, wind and cold we get in England is not ideal. I long for the warm weather. Anyway, this post is not about summer, it's about Autumn and Winter. So, without further ado, here are some things I like about these two seasons:

1. Hot chocolate

I'm more of a hot chocolate drinker than a tea or coffee drinker. However, I don't think it's socially acceptable to drink hot chocolate when it's warm inside. At least in Autumn and Winter I can get away with drinking it! I love topping my hot chocolate with marshmallows - it becomes just that little bit sweeter. Funnily enough, I tend to stick to the milk chocolate variety as although I love white chocolate, I find it a bit sickly in drink form.

2. Jumpers

I love jumpers! Though, to be honest, I don't have nearly enough! The great thing about jumper is that they pretty much go with anything, and you can just throw them on over a vest top and wear with jeans or a skirt. Simples!

3. Leaves crunching beneath your feet

How adorable?!

Isn't it just so satisfying?! Autumn leaves are so beautiful too.

4. Halloween

I haven't really had a "big" Halloween as such since I was in primary school, but it's still one of my most favourite days (or rather nights) of the year. I love dressing up (though I'm kinda boring and nearly always go as a witch) and there's always a good selection of films to watch on TV. Addams Family is my fave - it's so funny! Maybe I'll dress up as Wednesday this year, we'll see!

5. Christmas

How could I not include this?! Christmas is undoubtedly my most favourite time of the year. I love the food, the presents, the carols, the shop windows...and Winter Wonderland. This place is just incredible! I've been there at least ten times during the last four years! Here's a link to the photos I took at Winter Wonderland last year: Hyde Park and Winter Wonderland. There are also some brilliant Christmas films, such as Miracle on 34th Street, Home Alone and Gremlins.

6. My birthday

My birthday is in January, so of course that is another thing I love about Winter. I'll be 22 on my upcoming birthday! Ah, scary!! I'll be able to sing Taylor Swift all day!!

What are your favourite things about this time of year? Do you know what you're going as for Halloween yet?! Do you have a favourite Halloween / Christmas film? I'd love to hear your thoughts!

Hasta luego!

Top Tips For Uni

Hey guys!

With the beginning of the new uni year just around the corner, I thought I'd do a post sharing my top tips. As I've already been at uni for two years, I know how it works, and this post should be useful for anyone starting this year.

 1. Join the university / hall Facebook groups before starting

Facebook is great for keeping in touch with old friends. However, what you may not realise is that Facebook is also useful for making new friends. During the summer holidays before you head off to uni, join the different Facebook groups (for either your accommodation or the university in general - or both!) and start chatting to the other students. It'll help break the ice for when you arrive.

2. Subscribe to Netflix

Netflix is a fantastic way of watching all your favourite TV shows and films - and it's a lot cheaper than forking out for a TV licence.

3. Don't worry if you don't like going out

University students have a reputation for partying 24/7, but in reality most of us prefer to spend the night at home snuggled in bed with a tub of Ben and Jerry's watching Netflix. Don't feel like you have to go out to a club or a bar just because everyone else is.

4. Join clubs / societies

Societies are another way of making friends at uni (and they look great on your CV). Many universities have a whole variety of societies on offer, ranging from the standard sports to the unusual FetSoc (i.e. Fetish Society - yes, there is such a thing). Remember not to sign up to too many societies in your first week - you'll never make all of them! I'd say two or three is a good number.

5. Bring a laptop

This is probably an obvious one, but it does seem that some students don't have laptops. Having your own laptop saves all the stress of trying to find a computer in the library - there never seem to be enough.

6. Buy food as a household

Doing a weekly shop with your housemates can save money and you can cook things together.

7. Buy books secondhand

There is seriously no point in spending £60 on a book you're only going to pick up once. Save money by ordering used books from Amazon or other students. Many books may also be available in the library - even better!

8. Bring fancy dress

Fancy dress costumes are something you'll be needing right from Fresher's Week. Some of the most common themes include Disney, Decades and Superheroes. You'll also need a costume for Halloween - though many Freshers go out several times during the same week as Halloween so it may be useful to bring two.

9. Attend classes

As many lecturers upload their presentations for students to read after class, it is tempting to just skip lectures. However, attending lectures will enable you to get a better grasp of the material covered, and you can ask the teacher for help if you don't understand things.

10. Stock up on medicine

Flesher's Flu is real, and it's not nice either. Make sure you have a selection of medicine so that you are prepared for the unexpected cold. Water bottles are also good for the long winter nights.

And finally, have fun! University is such a good experience and I hope you enjoy it!

Hasta luego!

Beauty Haul

Hey guys!

Today I am going to share with you the beauty products I've purchased this month. I haven't actually done a beauty haul on this blog before, but I thought I'd start doing more beauty-based posts.

The first product I bought was the Virgin Mojito Body Sorbet from The Body Shop. I'd heard great things about this range so when my friend said she wanted to buy one of the products too, I couldn't resist. I do love mojitos and this moisturiser smells amazing - it's the perfect blend of lime and mint. I can't wait to use it! At £8.00 it's a little more pricey than other shower products I buy on a regular basis, but a girl can treat herself occasionally!

I love L'Oreal hair products, so when I saw this shampoo reduced in Superdrug I knew I had to buy it - I had run out of shampoo anyway!

Since I'd also used up all my shower gel, and Boots was doing a reduction on Radox shower gels, I decided to pick up the key lime & peppermint one. It goes well with the Virgin Mojito Body Sorbet.

I've never actually tried micellar water before, but there seems to be a lot of buzz about it at the moment. I found a mini bottle of the Garnier Micellar Cleansing Water for only £1 at my local Boots so I picked it up. If I like it, I'll purchase one of the bigger bottles.

I already have two bottles of the Simple Kind to Skin Moisturising Facial Wash at home, but they've been open for a while (don't ask how long!) - time to buy some more I think!

The last product is a bar of Strawberry Soap from The Body Shop. I do love the smell of strawberries - so sweet!

I hope you have enjoyed my first beauty haul post! Let me know if you've tried any of these products! :)

Hasta luego!

Tune Tuesday: New Songs #4

Hey guys!

In today's Tune Tuesday I will share some of the new songs I've been listening to during the last couple of weeks.

1. Wild - Troye Sivan

Love this! Troye Sivan is so cute!

2. Hair - Little Mix

'Meh' is the right word to describe this song. I'm sure others would disagree.

3. What Do You Mean? - Justin Bieber

I hate the fact that this is so catchy. Grrrrr.

4. Say Love - JoJo

To say I'm excited about JoJo's new song (and album) is a complete understatement. I've always loved her song Leave (Get Out).

5. In Time - FKA Twigs

She's just so odd. Not a fan. (For some reason I can only find live versions)

6. Run Away With Me - Carly Rae Jepsen

So it's not that new, but I've only started listening to it during the last month.

7. Love Myself - Hailee Steinfeld

Can't. Stop. Listening. To. This.

8. Body on Me - Rita Ora ft. Chris Brown

This song isn't anything special, but I do find myself singing along to it sometimes.

Have you heard any of these songs? What do you think of them?

What I've Been Watching In August

Hey guys!

Today I'm going to share with you the films I've been watching in August.

1. From Prada to Nada

When I first heard about From Prada to Nada, it sounded like the kind of film I'd enjoy. However, after watching the trailer and reading the reviews, I thought it would be some silly teen flick and decided not to watch it for a while. Eventually, I decided to give From Prada to Nada a chance, and I'm glad I did. From Prada to Nada is a decent film, and both Camilla Belle and Alexa Vega are brilliant. I loved the Latin twist on Jane Austen's Sense and Sensibility.

2. Love, Rosie

Although this film is full of clichés, and somewhat ridiculous in parts, I really enjoyed it. Lily Collins is great, as is Sam Claflin.

3. The Art of Getting By

Such a lovely, sweet film. Emma Roberts and Freddie Highmore are two of my favourite actors, and the chemistry between them in this film is good.

4. Ever After: A Cinderella Story

Yep, it's another retelling of Cinderella. If you read my What I've Been Reading in August post, you will see that there's a bit of a theme to some of the things I've been watching and reading this month. Anyway, Ever After: A Cinderella Story is a beautiful retelling of Cinderella. I loved that one of the Ugly Stepsisters was actually quite pleasant. Anjelica Huston is great as the evil stepmother. The ending of the film was satisfying too. I'm uncertain as to whether I preferred this retelling of Cinderella, or the new one starring Lily James, but they're both amazing films.

One of the best parts!

5. Melancholia

This film is so overrated. After reading several reviews, I thought Melancholia would be amazing, but it turned out to be rather boring. Justine, played by Kirsten Dunst, is infuriating and annoying. Nothing really happens for a lot of the film. I wanted to enjoy Melancholia, as it seemed like it had a lot of potential to be a great film, but it turned out to be very strange and tedious.

My reaction to the film went something like this:

6. Never Been Kissed

Before watching Never Been Kissed, I did NOT expect to see so many familiar faces in the film! Drew Barrymore (of course), Jessica Alba, James Franco, Octavia Spencer and Sean Whalen (Unfabulous) all make appearances. I have absolutely no idea why I didn't watch Never Been Kissed years ago - it's better than you'd expect, and Drew Barrymore is great!

So I've ticked off another three films from my 15 Chick Flicks I Want to See posts. Yay! 15 down, 15 more to go! Have you watched any of these films? Let me know in the comments!

The Ugly Stepsister

Hey guys!

I finished another book from Xpresso Book Tours on the weekend, so I thought I'd upload the review today.

Book Details:

The Ugly Stepsister by Aya Ling
Publication date: June 12th 2015
Publisher: CreateSpace Independent Publishing Platform
Pages: 295
Genres: Fantasy, Young Adult
Format: PDF

Synopis:

When Kat accidentally rips apart an old picture book, she’s magically transported into the world of Cinderella–as Katriona, one of the ugly stepsisters! Life turns upside down now that she’s a highborn lady and must learn how to survive the social season, including how to get through the door in a huge metal hoop skirt. To get back, she’ll have to complete the story, right to the end of happily ever after. But the odds are huge: the other stepsister is drop-dead gorgeous, the fairy godmother is nowhere to be found, and the prince, despite being insanely hot, openly dislikes balls. Can she ever return to the modern world?

My Thoughts:

I have always been a fan of fairy tales and retellings, so when I saw the blurb of The Ugly Stepsister, I knew I had to read it. Fortunately, I was in luck as Xpresso Book Tours were giving out copies in return for reviews. You can imagine my relief when I was approved for a copy.

The Ugly Stepsister is a retelling of Cinderella. Except there is a twist. At the beginning of the novel, we are introduced to Kat, a normal teenager living in the modern world. Whilst cleaning out the attic, Kat accidently trips over a book of fairytales (did I mention she's a bit of a klutz?) and is transported into story world. Naturally, Kat has absolutely no idea where she is - at first, she thinks she's dreaming, but with the help of a rather peculiar goblin called Krev, Kat soon realises that she is trapped in the world of Cinderella. In order to break the curse, and return to the present day, Kat must "put the story back together again."

As I mentioned in my mini review, The Ugly Stepsister is a fun read. Being familiar with the original plot of Cinderella, it's easy to expect this story to head in a similar direction. However, that is not always the case in The Ugly Stepsister. We follow the protagonist as she tries to find the Fairy Godmother and ensure that Cinderella (who is better known as Elle in this book) attends the ball, whilst falling in love herself (though I won't reveal whom with). Kat's clumsiness adds an element of humour to the novel, and she becomes more accustomed to her surroundings as the story progresses.

I found myself feeling quite sorry for Kat: she is bombarded with a seemingly impossible task, and understandably she makes a few mistakes along the way, though she manages to handle it pretty well. I like the fact that Kat isn't only interested in returning home - she also wants to help the children in the workhouse. To Kat, "it's second nature...that children shouldn't work at all", so it's not surprising that she is shocked at the harsh conditions the children of this time are forced to work in.

Overall, The Ugly Stepsister is a fantastic retelling of Cinderella. While it does remind me a little of Lost in Austen (which I never actually managed to finish - ooo, maybe I should do that tonight!), Aya Ling's book is original. It's easy to follow and the main character is relatable, since she is a bookworm, just like me. My one problem would be the ending, but other than that, I would definitely recommend The Ugly Stepsister.

Favourite quotes:

1. "Edward. He is everything a fairy tale prince should be, everything a girl could ask for. Smart, sympathetic, sexy as hell. His concern for me - slightly domineering but forgivable, given his status and Athelia's old-fashioned concept of women - is simply sweet. Every time he smiles at me, every time he touches me, every time he tries to show me he cares, my heart melts a little."

2. "I suppose I should be relieved he hasn't called me a lunatic and ordered to have me taken to an asylum."

3. "For a moment, I'm living in paradise. I breathe in his scent and cling to his back, listening to the water running from the nearby fountain and birds chirping in leafy branches."

4. "I have an ominous sense of impending doom."

Let me know if you read this book (or if you have read it already!)!

Hasta luego!

What I've Been Reading In August

Hey guys!

I'm a little late with my What I've Been Reading In August post, but better late than never, right? I've read quite a mix of books this month (well, last month, to be exact), including Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell, The Miniaturist by Jessie Burton, and The Ugly Stepsister, a fairly new book, by Aya Ling.

1. Fangirl - Rainbow Rowell

For some reason, I was very late to jump on the Fangirl bandwagon, and now that I've finally read the book, I have realised how overrated it is. Fangirl is a little too long and there are pages and pages where nothing much seems to happen. On the contrary, Cath is a character with whom I can easily relate and connect - she's fairly normal and spends a lot of time online (I don't like to admit it, but I do). I enjoyed reading about Cath's relationship with Levi, and I liked the excerpts from Simon Snow, which were dotted throughout the book.

2. The Summer I Turned Pretty - Jenny Han

The Summer I Turned Pretty is a lovely summertime read, with its combination of the beach and first love. Jenny Han's novel is sweet and surprisingly moving - I didn't expect to cry! However, Belly is quite immature and has a tendency to be annoying, so I couldn't really connect with her. Other than that, The Summer I Turned Pretty is a great book for the beach or a holiday as it's light-hearted and easy to read.

3. Perfect Chemistry - Simone Elkeles

I absolutely LOVED this book! I'm always up for a forbidden love story, and Perfect Chemistry is just that. It's well-written and clear that Simone Elkeles did her research. Brittany and Alex are such an unlikely couple, but they're perfect for each other! Can't wait to read the sequel, Rules of Attraction.

4. The Miniaturist - Jessie Burton

I was looking forward to reading this book, and fortunately it didn't disappoint. The Miniaturist is Jessie Burton's debut novel, though you wouldn't believe it. The Miniaturist makes an unusual and intriguing read. It's intense and dark, and emotional too.

5. Ash - Malinda Lo

Due to the fact that it is a retelling of Cinderella, I was looking forward to reading Ash. I'd heard mixed reviews about it, but the book has an interesting premise, one which I have not come across before in retellings of Cinderella. While Ash is undoubtedly an original take on my favourite fairy tale, with its LGBTQ twist, the whole Cinderella part does seem a bit unnecessary. Cinderella (or Ash, in this case) is supposed to fall in love with the prince, and in Malinda Lo's story, the prince plays such a minor part. Also, Sidhean, the fairy-godmother-like character, is really creepy! Though I admit I do feel somewhat sorry for him. There is also a lot of preamble, with Ash going into the woods on several occasions in hope of finding fairies - a bit ridiculous, if you ask me. As a result, we don't actually get to meet her love interest until quite late in the book. Despite my criticisms, I have to give the author credit for choosing such a controversial theme, and I did like Lo's writing, as well as her beautiful vivid imagery. I also love the cover of the copy I bought.

6. The Ugly Stepsister

I received an ARC copy of The Ugly Stepsister from Xpresso Book Tours in exchange for an honest review (the full version of which will be posted in due course). The Ugly Stepsister has an interesting premise - like Ash, this book is another retelling of Cinderella, but in this version a teenage girl is sucked into the fictional world and has to try to get Cinderella to fall in love with the Prince so that she can return to modern life. The girl, whose name is Kat, becomes one of the Ugly Stepsisters, hence the title of the book. The Ugly Stepsister is a fun book, and Kat's clumsiness is quite hilarious.

What books have you read recently? Any suggestions for future reads?

Hasta luego!
